BSU Might be the Club for You!
By: Sydney Frank '24
The Black Student Union (BSU) at Sherman Oaks CES had its first meeting on Tuesday, September 12. In this meeting, cabinet elections took place. The winners of the election were Sarah M. and Tierra T. as Co-Presidents, Isabella G. as Vice President, Leili S. as Secretary, Delany D. as Sergeant in Arms, Dahlia D. as Treasurer & Publicity, Ava S. in charge of Publicity, Sydney F. as Event Coordinator, and Marques R. as Historian. Congratulations to the new 2023-2024 Black Student Union cabinet!
What does the Black Student Union Club do? They are a cultural club that celebrates Black achievements and creations, such as music and even poetry. For example, at one of their last meetings, they had stations at which students discussed Black food, celebrities, and movies with Black leads. Other meetings may potentially include musical chairs and sharing circles during which people can talk about their experiences on campus. BSU also provides a safe space for Black students on campus where they can unapologetically be themselves. BSU is open to students of all ethnicities and backgrounds.
As for year-long plans for the club, they intend to have a Black History Month Assembly as well as a Black History Month Spirit Week in February. Other ideas include field trips to the Black College Expo to learn about Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), to the African American Museum in Exposition Park, and movie nights showing films such as Love and Basketball and Black Panther. However, they would like to emphasize that these are simply ideas and need administrative approval as well as possible funding.
If you appreciate or would like to learn more about Black culture, then be sure to join the BSU club!
