Dramas First Show of the Year: She Kills Monsters!

By: Jeremy Shishkin '25

Since the start of the fall semester, Drama has been working tirelessly on a show for SOCES to enjoy. After a long awaited performance, and many practices, the show is out and it's called “She Kills Monsters!” The show is rated PG-13 and the script was written by Qui Nguyen in 2011, from which SOCES Drama bought the rights to perform it.

The play is about a girl named Agnes Evans, who tries to overcome the sudden and tragic death of her sister Tilly. Up to this point, the two never got to know each other that well because they were always polar opposites. While Agnes is cleaning out her sister's room, she stumbles upon a Dungeons and Dragons (DND) game that her sister created. And in an attempt to find out more about her sister, Agnes begins to play the game with the help of her friend Chuck.

The more Agnes plays, the more she experiences the fantasy DND world and all of the side quests that are introduced along the way. She also becomes more connected with her sister as she learns about her “inside world.” In the midst of fantasy and reality, Agnes finally finds her sister’s identity and keeps her in her memory. The overall show is rather a heartwarming play with a touch of comedy but also with grief and acceptance.

The best part about SOCES Drama putting on this show for us is that it was completely free to watch! The Drama crew performed this play from November 1st-3rd, in the Glenn Hall after school. They put on a spectacular show and everyone loved it.

Ms. Potter, the Drama teacher, is extremely happy with her students. She says, “We’ve had so many people who have come after school for rehearsals. They’ve taken late buses, have gotten home late, and memorized all their lines.” Ms. Potter was really proud of her students, especially their acting skills! “For this play in particular, there are mature themes where the characters are high schoolers, and the Drama team really got the emotional depth of their characters down!”

As mentioned earlier, Drama has been hard at work since the beginning of the fall semester, and they even know what their next play is going to be. The new auditorium is also supposed to be open by this time, so Drama really looks forward to performing there. Ms. Potter says, “Our next production is Mean Girls, and we look forward to performing in the new auditorium. It will be a better experience for our audience and maybe the performance and the professional atmosphere will inspire more students to join Drama!”

Another huge part of the show’s success was Stage Crew! “We are extremely thankful to have Mr. Pak’s Stage Crew. They have been so busy with events back to back. They worked tirelessly to put together a fabulous show and we are grateful!”

Another student in Drama who played the character “Chuck,” Mardiross Boyadjian, says that “The experience of the show was positive. The play went well and the actors did a great job! It's a great community. For me, plays are always fun to perform.” The audience that saw the show also had a great time. People who saw the show left positive remarks and even wished that they knew about the show sooner so that they could have another chance to watch it! With the success of Drama's latest production, students are eagerly awaiting Drama's next show “Mean Girls.”
