Russian Heritage Assembly

By: Mariam Torosyan ‘24

On Monday, October 16, 2023, a Russian Heritage Assembly took place in room 700 where Russian students talked about how important Russian immigration is to the United States. Students first presented the history of immigration with a slideshow to the guests. Then, guests were invited to different sets of tables or where presentations took place to see the significance and history of the exhibit. A hidden treasure of artifacts and exhibits awaited discovery at these tables, with students explaining what they are and the history behind it. Russian nesting dolls, delicious sweets, ancient typewriters, priceless antiques, real clothing from 1966, and intriguing objects shed light on the interactions between Russian immigrants and American society. The display also included outstanding depictions of Russian tsars and other royal family members, which appealingly enriched the historical background. At the end, students got a chance to taste Russian candy, as a reward for learning about Russian culture.

Ms. Amelova, the Russian teacher, says, “This is a presentation of how important Russian immigration is to the United States and our main focus was on 20th-century immigration. We based the research on the original documents and records from the Russian Museum and the Department of Slavic Languages at UCLA. The Russian Museum graciously permitted us to borrow elements of their exhibit, allowing us to bring this enriching experience to our school community.’’

12th grade student Eva Karamanoukian states, “This is important because it is not just the history of our school but the history of countless individuals who have contributed to the American tapestry. Understanding our origins fosters a deeper comprehension of the journeys undertaken by all."

Michael Grigoryan, an 11th grader, states, “Knowing about the history of Russian immigration is important because it helps us understand the cultural diversity and contributions of Russian immigrants to the United States. It sheds light on the cultural richness of immigrants to the United States and what they went through to get where they are now.”

The Russian Assembly really informed students about the profound significance of Russian immigration to the United States. It marked the invaluable contributions and cultural diversity that Russian immigrants have created in American society, honoring their struggles and celebrating their accomplishments. It was clear that students enjoyed being a part of this exhibition and learning about Russian Culture. Thank you to the Ms. Amelova and her Russian class for this immersive opportunity.
