SBAC Scores in SOCES are on the Rise!

By: Levon Grigoryan ‘25

In the midst of all the events happening at SOCES, we recently have received more exciting news about our school's standardized testing scores. Our school's education has been skyrocketing these past few years and according to this news, we have every reason to believe that we will keep going up and up in our rankings.

Before we get into details about what our students have accomplished, many students always bring up the question, why are SBAC scores important? What better way to answer this question than to ask our wonderful head principal, Mrs. Parker. She says, “The scores themselves, or school rankings will have a small impact on whether you get into the universities you are trying to get into. However, if SBAC scores show that students are not meeting standards in certain areas, it infers that they will do poorly on their placement exams. This results in many students having to retake many highschool classes in college in order to catch up.” And as the principal, Mrs. Parker feels that it is her duty to her school and her students to make sure that every student not only makes it into college but makes it through until the very end. Without falling back, and without having to retake classes. The only way the principal can know whether these years students are ready is through SBAC exams. Students shouldn't stress out about the scores but make sure that they understand what they are being tested on. They should focus on understanding the basis of each general subject in order to avoid any negative progress, and to learn from mistakes.

Diving deeper into SBAC scores, specifically, how our school has been doing? Looking through most of our scores and comparing them from previous years, we can see that our students' English SBAC scores have increased by 1.43% with 70% of our students meeting the standards for English, and an increase of 7.5% in Math SBAC scores with 50% of our students meeting the standards for math. This increase in scores might not seem significant, but when compared to our past scores and against other schools, it is a drastic increase. We scored higher SBAC scores than LACES, and higher than our sister school which is currently in the U.S. News, ranked 2nd in the district. Not only is our ranking as a school going to continue going up, but we also got a Niche Award and became a standout school for the first time. Our students' increase in SBAC scores this year has caused one of the largest school recommending programs to rate our school as an A+ outstanding school!

One other thing that Mrs. Parker highlighted is, based on previous scores, she can understand which areas students are struggling in the most. Based on this information, the school can implement free tutoring classes. This way money won't become an issue and any student who needs help can reach out and receive help.
