Spring Sports Preview 2024

By: Oscar Orellana '24

With the second semester at SOCES rolling into full swing, spring sports are getting their teams ready for competition. SOCES is also proud to announce the introduction of ANOTHER new team on campus this semester, which is swim. It should be an exciting couple of months to round out the school year for SOCES sports.

The SOCES baseball team will look to have a lovely start to the season on Valentine’s Day against Hollywood High School. A plethora of non-league games smother the first half of their schedule, as the team will play their first league game on April 3rd. The boys will look to build on the promising playoff season from last year and get even further this time around.

On the contrary, softball will be teeing off on January 29th, the earliest of the spring sports to begin their season. Their opening match-up will be a great opportunity to set the tone for the season against Sotomayor. The first half of the season also shows an emphasis on non-league games, with league games beginning on March 21st. With the young core returning from last year, the Lady Knights will expand on their strengths and look to dominate this season.

SOCES swim will make its first appearance this spring! With an informational meeting happening this week, it will be interesting to see how many students will be interested in this new co-ed sport. This is the second new team introduced to SOCES this year, coupled with girls’ flag football.

Coach Lim is ready to lead her boy's tennis team out for the second round of tennis action this year. The boy's tennis team will open up their season on February 21st, with an away game at Kennedy High School. Their season runs through April 18th, ending with an away game at North Hollywood High School.

Another sport similar to tennis that has the boys going in the spring semester is volleyball. Coach Bourgault’s team will be holding tryouts soon for all those interested in playing, and their season will start on February 12th at home against Sun Valley Magnet. The team looks to have a memorable season for the group of seniors that will be leaving. Non-league games will take the team through March 7th, with the remainder of the season being only league matchups.

Lastly, with the biggest team on campus, track and field will be competing this spring as well. Coach Joel is holding an informational meeting on January 18th and is looking for as many people on the team as possible. This will be the 3rd season of track and field since it was brought to the SOCES campus in 2021, and with a handful of seniors on the team, they will look to finally conquer the league and beat Sun Valley Magnet, their league rivals.

Spring sports always bring the juice to finish out the year, and this set of teams will ruffle some feathers in their respective ways. Make sure to show out and support all SOCES spring sports teams this semester!
