One event leading up to SOCES Homecoming was the Homecoming parade, which built school spirit among students and got people excited about homecoming and ready to be involved in school events.
The planner of the homecoming parade and ASB president, senior Ruby Mischkot, argued that the parade is to inspire spirit, saying, “I think homeroom can be sort of like a quiet time, kind of a bleak way to start the morning, and then by immediately waking up with yelling and shouts it gets people excited, like, things are actually happening on campus right in front of them, if they want to get involved.” Ruby says parades like this one do indeed get students more involved and excited about other school events.
But don’t just take it from her; sophomore Euriona Cong, who joined the parade, said: “The parade was great, me and my friends joined … it felt very whimsical.” Many students enjoy ASB-run events like the homecoming parade, but what goes into planning them?
Ruby explained that planning the homecoming parade can be difficult because she has to decide who to include, what route the parade should take around SOCES, and what exactly increases school spirit the most. Ruby explained that ASB wanted strong representation from different groups at SOCES in the parade because it would help raise spirit the most. As a result, the parade featured a wide array of people from the football and cheer teams to the band, which played music as the parade rolled by.
Overall, many students enjoyed the homecoming parade, and it was a successful and entertaining way to boost school spirit and let SOCES students have fun.
